What Is ChatGPT?
“Over the next few years, I see AI becoming more deeply embedded in our everyday workflows, not just as a tool for answering questions, but as a true collaborative partner.” – Steve Ballinger, MBA

ChatGPT really is everywhere today. From tech blogs and business boardrooms to social media feeds. Whether you’re a curious learner or a seasoned professional, it’s hard to miss the growing influence of AI tools like ChatGPT.
ChatGPT, short for Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer, is an advanced language model developed by OpenAI.Chat generative pretrained transformer (ChatGPT) is an advanced language model developed by OpenAI that generates human-like responses to prompts with incredible accuracy.
While traditional chatbots rely on preprogrammed rules and limited responses, ChatGPT uses the power of large language models (LLMs) to understand and reply to prompts and questions. Think of it like being in a car, free to roam wherever you want, as opposed to being on a train, where what you can do and where you can go are predetermined.
The LLMs it uses have been trained on massive datasets of text and code. They allow it to generate creative and informative content, translate between languages, write in a variety of text formats, and answer questions in a comprehensive and informative manner.
This article explores ChatGPT and its underlying technology, how it’s used across multiple industries, and its potential to reshape the future of work.
How Does ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT can seem almost magical to a nontechnical person, but everything it does is rooted in a core set of components and technologies. Let’s explore some of the key components that make up ChatGPT and the LLM that powers it.
Natural Language Processing (NLP): How ChatGPT Interprets and Generates Text
One of the biggest hurdles to technology adoption is how we’re able to interface with it. Programmers speak to computers in code that executes on machines, but most people don’t want to interact like that. They want to interact with it naturally in the same way they’d have a conversation with another human.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows this to happen. It’s a branch of AI that helps computers understand and work on human language. ChatGPT uses it to analyze your input, figure out what you’re asking, and generate responses relevant to your question.
For example, let’s say you ask ChatGPT, “What’s the weather like in Paris?” NLP will take your question and strip it down to the key elements, such as “weather” and “Paris,” and then try to decipher the implied request from your question.
ChatGPT uses that NLP analysis to access relevant data and responds with an appropriate and informative answer. It can further infer intent, such as providing an extended forecast for the week or suggesting appropriate clothing for the weather.
Machine Learning & Deep Learning: Training on Vast Datasets to Improve Responses
ChatGPT has the ability to learn and improve over time due to the machine learning and deep learning algorithms it uses. These algorithms allow it to process large amounts of data, find patterns, and refine its responses.
As ChatGPT is regularly being used, the data is constantly growing. The more data it’s exposed to, the more accurate and advanced its responses become.
Transformers & GPT Architecture: The Foundation of ChatGPT’s Language Modeling
Transformer architecture is at the heart of ChatGPT’s language modeling capabilities. The transformers are deep learning models that are great at processing sequential data, such as text, by finding complex relationships between words and phrases. This architecture, designed for natural language interaction, allows ChatGPT to generate text that’s grammatically correct, relevant to the question, and human-like in nature.
Now that we’ve explored how ChatGPT works under the hood, let’s look at how it’s transforming real-world work.

Expert Insights with Steve Ballinger, MBA
What essential skills should professionals focus on to leverage ChatGPT effectively in their work?
I believe there are two essential skills. Number one is prompt engineering. Think of that as the art of writing good prompts to get the results you desire from ChatGPT. The core philosophy I teach and demonstrate is that better prompts equals better results.
Secondly, is to stay on top of new features and capabilities of ChatGPT as things are rapidly changing. I am constantly trying to keep my ChatGPT course for work updated as powerful new capabilities are dropping all the time if you know where to find them and how to apply them.
How can businesses or individuals get hands-on experience with ChatGPT, and why is it important to integrate these tools into everyday workflows?
The best way to get started is with the free version of ChatGPT. You can do quite a bit with it, although stepping up to a pay version after getting comfortable with the free version is what most professionals do. Better results and more capabilities in the paid version.
In terms of workflows the first step is a huge mindshift. For most people, myself included, we are used to doing a simple Google search and sifting through information or we use an established best practice in our workplace. The shift is to start with “How can AI like ChatGPT help me with this and how can I craft a prompt to get the results I desire.” Then using follow-up prompts to fine-tune your results. Then use that and apply the human element, your brain, to finish what you are looking to create. In the end, AI like ChatGPT, is a tool and the humans are in charge. Yea humans!
How do you foresee the future of AI and ChatGPT evolving over the next few years, and what trends should professionals watch for?
The future of AI—and ChatGPT specifically—is incredibly exciting and fast-moving. Over the next few years, I see AI becoming more deeply embedded in our everyday workflows, not just as a tool for answering questions, but as a true collaborative partner. ChatGPT will continue to evolve from a reactive assistant to a proactive co-pilot—helping professionals brainstorm ideas, automate repetitive tasks, generate high-quality content, and even make data-driven decisions more efficiently.
One major trend to watch is multimodal AI—models like ChatGPT that can understand and generate not just text, but also images, audio, video, and code. This opens up new creative possibilities across industries, from marketing to software development to education.
Another key trend is the personalization of AI experiences. With custom GPTs and memory features, professionals will be able to tailor AI tools to their unique needs, workflows, and even communication styles. This means more intuitive, context-aware assistance that feels less like a generic chatbot and more like a smart digital teammate.
Finally, AI literacy is becoming a must-have skill. Just like learning how to use email or spreadsheets changed the workplace many decades ago, understanding how to prompt, collaborate with, and responsibly use AI like ChatGPT will be a huge differentiator for professionals going forward.
For anyone looking to stay ahead, the best thing to do is get hands-on with AI now—experiment, learn, and explore how it can enhance your work. The future belongs to those who know how to work with AI, not against it.
